About our Board of Trustees

Nigel Waters Chairperson

"15 years of service with London’s Metropolitan Police proved an excellent preparation for a (relatively late) entry into a commercial career within the sales and marketing industry which eventually led to senior roles at EPL clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham FC. Further contracts at major sporting events including the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, FIFA World Cups and Rugby World Cups followed.

During this time, Nigel met and then married a Kiwi and the decision was made to settle initially in Sydney but then subsequently the Bay of Plenty where a consumer promotions agency was started to fund the lifestyle. A few years later, this business was successfully sold which enabled Nigel to focus on social issues that concerned him; initially with the Salvation Army retail stores before joining the Board of Trustees of TLWV.  Nigel is also a trained presenter of De-escalation techniques and ‘Managing Challenging Behaviour’”.

I am a registered nurse with a background in women’s health originally, completing my MSc in reproductive health at the University of Wales before coming to New Zealand in 1998, I spent the first few years teaching undergraduate nursing students at Wintec in community development and women’s health papers.

I moved to Pinnacle in 2004 as a quality facilitator for their general practice network and developed a strong passion for workforce development, quality improvement and patient safety.  I broadened my quality management experience with a couple of years at St John as the national quality manager before returning to Midlands Health Network as Director of Nursing in 2010.  The move to a senior management role at Hauraki PHO in 2015 centred my focus on leading for better health and wellbeing outcomes for whānau.

In my current role as Chief Executive for Western Bay of Plenty Primary Health Organisation (PHO), I lead a team providing strategic and operational support to our network of general practices and suite of Iwi led services across the Bay of Plenty.

The growing New Zealand discourse affirming the need for more holistic approaches to health and wellbeing, partnering with NGOs, social services and community providers appeals greatly, knowing that physical, emotional and mental wellness go hand in hand with social, environmental and spiritual determinants of health.

I firmly believe that compassion, tolerance and acceptance are fundamental requisites to responding to the impact of poor health, poverty and isolation.  As such, these are intrinsically connected to health and healing. I am particularly interested in strategies aimed at strengthening the multi-agency partnership approach to supporting people impacted by these factors.
